My name is Dwinda and I am Indonesian. In 2014, I went to Mie Prefecture for the first time to study in Master Degree Program of Faculty of Bioresources of Mie University. I studied in Mie University with scholarship from Indonesian government. To be honest, before I got this scholarship, I have no idea about Mie Prefecture. I know Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hokkaido, but not Mie. Then I searched more about Mie Prefecture on Google before lecturers from Mie University came to Indonesia for interviewing scholarship candidates. I found that Mie Prefecture has a lot of attractions such as Ise Jingu, Ama Divers, and Matsusaka Beef. Something that I didn’t know before. It is interesting to know that Mie has a lot of hidden tourism destinations that not many international tourists know about it. At that time, I am sure that my stay in Mie will be interesting and fun.

インドネシア人のドウィンダといいます。2014年に、三重大学の生物資源の修士課程で学ぶために初めて三重県へやって来ました。三重大学ではインドネシアの国費留学生として学んでいました。
東京や京都、大阪、北海道のことは知っていましたが、国費留学が決まるまで三重県のことは実は何も知りませんでした。だから、三重大学の講師の方がインドネシアに留学候補者の面接にやってくるまでの間に三重県のことを検索しました。すると、三重県には伊勢神宮や海女さん、松阪牛など魅力的なものがいっぱいあることが分かりました。どれも調べるまで知らなかったことばかりです。
ほとんどの外国人旅行者が知らない三重県のいろいろな観光地を調べるのが楽しくて、そのうちに、きっと私の三重での暮らしはきっと興味深くて楽しいものになるだろうと確信するようになりました。

In Mie University, I researched about ecotourism and my sensei gave me a chance to do internship for one year in Kaito Yumin Club, an eco-tour operator in Toba City. He was sure that my internship experience will give me a broad view about ecotourism in Japan, especially in Ise-Shima National Park. In this internship, I gained my knowledge about Mie Prefecture tourism, especially about Ise-Shima. I met locals and tried to talk to them. Although my Japanese is not really good and sometimes Toba dialect can be challenging, the people in Toba are very warm and friendly. It reminds me of Indonesia. That is why I love Toba City very much. Therefore, when my boss in Kaito Yumin Club offered me a job in Toba after graduated from Mie University, I said YES! I work in Kaito Yumin Club for 2.5 years. I guided Japanese, foreign tourists, and journalists coming to Ise-Shima area. Sometimes, I also guided my Indonesian friends and relatives to other tourist destinations in Mie, such as Iga City, Nabana No Sato, and Misugi.

三重大学ではエコツーリズム（※1）について研究しました。すると私の先生が「海島遊民くらぶ」（※2）という、鳥羽市でエコツアーをしている会社での一年間のインターンシップを紹介してくれたのです。先生は、日本の中でも特に伊勢志摩国立公園という場所でインターンシップすることできっとエコツーリズムの幅広い視野が身につくだろうと言ってくれました。
インターンシップでは、三重県の観光、特に伊勢志摩について学びつつ、地元の人に会えばがんばって話しかけました。私の日本語は上手じゃないし鳥羽の方言も難しかったけれど、鳥羽の人たちはとても温かくフレンドリーに接してくれました。なんだかインドネシア人と似たところがあって、本当に鳥羽のことが大好きになりました。なので、大学卒業時に海島遊民くらぶの社長が鳥羽で働かないかとオファーしてくれたときは「イエス！」と言いました。
それから２年半の間、日本人と外国人の旅行者、さらに取材で伊勢志摩に来た記者の方を案内しました。ときどき、インドネシアからやって来た友だちや親せきを三重県内のほかの場所、例えば伊賀市、（桑名市の）なばなの里、（津市の）美杉に連れて行くこともありましたね。

  旅行者とともに（鳥羽市・答志島（とうしじま）にて）

I still remember, in the beginning of my internship in Toba, many local people (especially the obaasan and ojiisan) were staring at me like I am an alien when they see me on the street. Maybe it is because there are not so many foreigners in Toba, especially those who wears hijab (Muslim’s scarf) like me. However, after years working in Toba, many of them are now became my friends and getting used to see me with my hijab. We greet each other and talk like friends. Even I make friends with Ama divers too! Even though Toba people around me now know me as a foreigner who work in Toba, I have a funny experience with Japanese tourist in Toba. When I was cleaning kayak after tour in front of my office, a Japanese tourist came to me and asked if I am an Ama diver. I laughed and realized that my swimming outfit was look like the Ama’s outfit because the Muslim women swim-wear is like a diving suit with head cover. Just like Ama! Therefore, the next time my boss asked me to cosplay as an Ama in Japan Travel Mart, I not feel different with Ama.

鳥羽でインターンを始めて間もないころ、道で出会った地元の人、特におばあさんやおじいさんがまるで私のことをエイリアンのように眺めていたことを今も覚えています。鳥羽には外国人があまりいなくて、中でも私のようにヒジャブ（イスラム教徒が頭に巻くスカーフ）を着ている人が珍しかったのでしょう。それでも、鳥羽で数年働くうちに私たちは友だちになり、ヒジャブにも慣れていったようでした。私たちは親しくあいさつし、おしゃべりをするようになりました。海女さんとも友だちになったんですよ！
やがて鳥羽の人たちは私を地元で働いている外国人だと分かるようになりましたが、そのあとも日本人旅行者との間で面白い出来事がありました。案内が終わってからオフィスの前でカヤックを洗っていたとき、ある日本人が私のところへやって来て、私のことを海女さんかと質問してきたのです。笑ってしまいましたが、私が着ていたイスラム教徒の女性用水着が頭部のカバー付きで、まるで海女さんのダイビングスーツそっくりだったんですね！
そんなこともあって、そのあとのジャパントラベルマート（※）で社長に言われて海女さんのコスプレをしたときも、全く違和感がありませんでした。

In the end of 2017, after my husband graduated from his Master Degree in Mie University, we decided to back to Indonesia for good. I work as an English/Japanese tourist guide in Jakarta and sometimes I also work as sales representative of Ama Hut Hachimankamado during Japan Travel Meeting in Indonesia.

夫が三重大学の修士課程を修了した2017年の終わりに、私たち夫婦はインドネシアに帰ることにしました。
今ではジャカルタで英語と日本語が話せる旅行ガイドとして働いているほか、インドネシア国内で開かれる日本旅行の商談会では海女小屋「はちまんかまど」（※）のセールスの仕事もしています。

In Indonesia, I miss Japanese food that I often ate in Mie. Although Japanese food is easy to find in Indonesia, sometimes I miss special food from Mie. I miss the sweetness of Akafuku shaved ice during summer, the tekonezushi from Kaigetsu Inn, and food that I got from Ama-san when I guided tourists to their hut. Sometimes, if my Japanese friend from Ise-Shima said that they want to send me a gift from Japan, I always asked them to send me Mie’s food. Of course, it is impossible to send mochi or seafood sushi from Japan, so they sent me dried seaweed (hijiki is my favourite!) harvested by the Ama-san from Osatsu. It tastes so gooood! The umami flavour of the seaweed brings back the memory from Mie.

インドネシアに帰った今、三重で食べた日本の食べ物のことを恋しく思っています。インドネシアで日本の食べ物を探すのは簡単ですが、三重ならではの食事は本当に恋しいです。夏にはあの甘い赤福氷、「海月」の近くで食べた「てこね寿司」（※1）、海女小屋をガイドしたときに海女さんからいただいた海産物…。
ときどき伊勢志摩にいる日本人の友達が日本の品物を送ってくれるのですが、そんなときはいつも三重の食べ物をお願いしています。もちろんお餅や鮮魚のお寿司は送れないので、相差（※2）の海女さんが獲った海藻の乾物を送ってもらっています（特にひじきが気に入っています！）。本当においしいですし、海藻が持つ「うまみ」を味わうと三重での日々がなつかしく思い出されます。

Now, the COVID-19 pandemic stops everything. My Japanese friends cannot send me dried seaweed anymore from Japan and all of the Japan travel exhibition in Indonesia are cancelled. But thanks to technology, I still can do virtual tour to my Indonesian tourists! Virtual tour is a tour using Zoom application (sometimes we also use other platform such as Google Meet), combining guiding technique, pictures, videos, and Google maps. Virtual tour is new, but it grows rapidly in Indonesia during pandemic. In this tour, I show tourist destinations in Mie to my audiences and tell them a story about Mie cultures (the ninjas, Ama divers, and also the food). Surprisingly, many of my audiences enjoy it! It opens their mind that Mie is very unique and worth a visit. I am so happy that even in this pandemic, I still can be a bridge (架け橋) between Mie and Indonesia.

いま、新型コロナウイルスのパンデミックによって何もかもがストップしてしまいました。日本の友達から海藻を送ってもらうこともできず、インドネシア国内での日本旅行の展示会も全て中止になっています。
でもインターネットのおかげで、インドネシアの皆さんをバーチャルツアーにお連れすることができるんです！バーチャルツアーとは、ZoomやGoogle Meetのようなアプリを使って、画像、動画、グーグルマップとガイド案内を組み合わせた旅行体験を提供するサービスです。
バーチャルツアーはまだ新しい試みですが、このパンデミックをきっかけにインドネシアで急速に成長しました。私はお客さんに三重の観光地をお見せして、三重ならではのストーリーとして忍者や海女、そして食文化のことを話しています。驚くかもしれませんが、皆さんに楽しんでもらえています！そして、三重がとてもユニークで、旅行する価値がある場所なのだと知ってもらえます。
このパンデミックの状況下であっても、三重とインドネシアをつなぐ「架け橋」（※）になれることを幸せに思っています。
